Budding Bakers Take the Lead

Lower Elementary Hosts A Bake Sale!

October 14, 2025

Lower Elementary students proudly hosted their very first Bake Sale — and what a sweet success it was! Ustadha Sumayyah narrates the learning taking place behind the initiative.

Held on a beautiful afternoon during the blessed month of Ramadan, the event brought together students, staff, and families to celebrate learning, community, and of course — delicious treats! The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement, and the air was filled with the irresistible aroma of freshly baked goodies.

But this wasn't just any bake sale. It was the combination of wonderful hands-on learning experience that combined practical life skills with academic concepts. Prior to the bake sale our young learners were hard at work in the school kitchen, carefully measuring, mixing, and baking a variety of sweet and savoury treats. From cakes, cinnamon roll pastries and their best seller chocolate brownies. There was something for everyone — especially perfect for sharing at Iftar.

Learning Through Real-Life Math

One of the most exciting aspects of this project was how deeply involved the students were in the money-handling side of the event. In preparation for the big day, students spent time in class learning how to:

  • Recognize and count different denominations of money
  • Calculate prices and total purchases
  • Make change quickly and accurately
  • Keep a simple tally of sales
  • Practice customer interactions and polite conversation

Teachers created role-play scenarios where students took turns being the “shopkeeper” and the “customer,” helping them build confidence in both math and communication skills. Many students also practiced mental math, adding totals and figuring out how to give correct change — all essential skills they were proud to demonstrate on the day. It was a joy to see how seriously they took their roles, writing down orders, working out totals and double checking to make sure everything ran smoothly. Their independence and teamwork were truly inspiring!

Parents, siblings, teachers, and staff all came out in support, turning the bake sale into a joyful community event. Held in the spirit of giving and togetherness that defines Ramadan, the bake sale offered everyone a chance to contribute and connect.

All proceeds from the sale will go towards supporting student-led activities and future learning projects — making the experience even more meaningful for our young entrepreneurs.

Jazakum Allahu Khairan to everyone who came and supported our students. Your presence encouraged them and helped turn a simple school project into a powerful learning milestone.

We are incredibly proud of our Lower Elementary students — for their enthusiasm, their sense of responsibility, and their growing confidence in both life skills and character. This was more than just a bake sale; it was a special memory in a special month.
